Unreal Landscape Demo

This was a experimentation for my “Intro to Unreal” class to create a realistic landscape using Unreal’s built in tools and assets.

Responsibilities + Accomplishments


This was demo for my unreal class were I was tasked with making a landscape utilizing unreal’s built in terrain tools and assets while using ray tracing to create a environment popular in the industry at the time.

I was responsible for creating the environment and studying real work landscapes and making them in unreal engine. I was also tasked with optimizing the game to make sure it didn’t lag with all the imported assets.

I was also tasked with incorporating multiple textures and sounds to match the environment to make the demo more immersive.

Design Process


I wasn’t really sure where to start with this project as I never designed anything more open world. I really wanted to make something that looked like a real world landscape, so I spent a lot of time studying real life references and even game map landscapes.

I tried to use a lot of different textures to better blend the ground with the mountains and using procedural generation and fine tuning it to better fit in to the world environment and make it more immersive with sound from both the player and the world. I also wanted to make sure that the landscape wouldn’t inhibit the player in anyway which did mean I had to scrap the idea of having water physics as even though I experimented with it, I was unable to make it work with my current knowledge at the time. If I ever went back to this project I would definitely focus on trying to add more interesting objects besides just nature fauna.
